His wife Leonora had packed her bags and traveled away three days ago. Or was it perhaps four days ago? He couldn’t remember exactly.Nevertheless, he couldn’t blame her for it. She would have been furious at him if he dared. And he knew perfectly well that it might be his fault.

He could surely be a pain to live with.Sometimes he was like a hot volcano or something. But Leonora was not a soft and gentle kind of person either. In fact she was an extremely expressive person. But most of the time she just sputtered around on the surface.Toralv was different. On the surface he seemed quite peaceful.

But he had a vivid inner life. That was probably what Leonora had admired when they first met. But she envied it too. And she hated it.Compared to him, she had a dry and dusty inside. So she had to admire him, basically. But sometimes it was too much for her. Then she would explode in lots of little pieces. But most of the time she pretended to be a normal human being.

He couldn’t hide his brilliant uniqueness. And probably she was completely knocked out by it.So now and then she would need her little breaks, he realized. Or maybe she finally hoped that she had found a better way to live?Officially her name was not Leonora, just Lena. But Lena was too boring and ordinary.

In the long run Toralv could not have been married to a woman called Lena, at least not when he was going to be known as Toralv Helmers himself. Then Leonora sounded like a far better match. So he called her that, and she had no objections to it.So his wife had taken off again. And all the sudden he was left alone with the responsibility for their kids. They were two boys and a little girl. The girl usually slept over at her grandmother’s place anyway. That was her safe haven. The two boys also had left the house at the moment.

They seemed to have disappeared during the night. Toralv had really no reason to have objections to it. After all, he had been on a party himself. But anyway, it had been kind of sad to wake up alone in the big empty house.“Such evil rats,” he murmured grimly.“They have left me alone in this sinking ship!”Then he put up a compassionate expression in the mirror. But right there he spotted his own face. It was beautiful as always. Certainly he was an extraordinarily handsome human being, this could not be denied. Ever since he was a little boy, he had been a rare beauty. His mother used to be “the woman with the beautiful son”.

All the other mothers had envied her. And she had appreciated their obvious envious feelings. But now the other women were not that envious anymore. By now their sons had got themselves useful educations and prestigious jobs. Now it was up to Toralv to prove what he was good for. So far he hadn’t proved anything. But luckily, his mother adored him anyway. He was lucky to have her. His father had never idolized him at all. Instead the old man had bothered him as often as he possibly could.Several times he had punished him hard and put him through lots of pain.

Perhaps the old man regarded his son as a younger competitor in some kind of an evil game. But now the old man had been dead for many years. And Toralv’s little sister was dead too, a long time ago. Now just Toralv and his mother remained. The rest of their old family was gone.
